Google Business Profile Optimization Checklist (2026)
A 27-step checklist to rank your Google Business Profile in the Map Pack — what to fill in, what to skip, and what to do every week.
Why GBP is the #1 local SEO lever
For local service businesses — dentists, lawyers, contractors, restaurants, salons — Google Business Profile drives more new customers than your website does. The 'Map Pack' (those 3 results above the regular search results) gets about 44% of clicks for local queries. If you're not in the top 3, you're invisible.
The 27-step checklist
1. Claim your profile at business.google.com. 2. Verify by postcard, phone, or video. 3. Use your exact legal business name — no keyword stuffing (Google penalizes it). 4. Pick the most specific primary category. 5. Add 5–9 relevant secondary categories. 6. Fill in your full address OR check 'service area business' (not both). 7. Add service areas if you travel to customers. 8. Set accurate hours, including holiday hours. 9. Add your phone number — use a local area code if possible. 10. Add your website URL (homepage or a city-specific landing page). 11. Write a 750-character business description with 2–3 natural keyword mentions.
12. Add at least 10 high-quality photos: exterior, interior, team, products, work in progress. 13. Add a logo and a cover photo. 14. Upload a short intro video (under 30 seconds). 15. List every service with a clear description and price if possible. 16. List every product with photos. 17. Add booking links if you take appointments. 18. Add messaging so customers can text you directly. 19. Set up the Q&A section — seed it with 3–5 common questions and answer them yourself. 20. Add attributes (wheelchair accessible, free Wi-Fi, etc.).
21. Get your first 10 reviews from real customers — never fake ones. 22. Respond to every review, good and bad, within 48 hours. 23. Post a Google Post (offer, update, event) every week. 24. Add at least 1 new photo per month. 25. Check the Insights tab monthly to see what searches you're showing up for. 26. Keep your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) identical across your website, directories, and social profiles. 27. Build local citations on Yelp, BBB, industry-specific directories, and your local chamber of commerce.
What NOT to do
Don't keyword-stuff your business name (Google will suspend you). Don't use a virtual office or PO box as your address. Don't ask for reviews with offers or discounts (against Google's terms). Don't create multiple profiles for the same location. Don't ignore negative reviews — respond professionally and try to resolve them.
Weekly 15-minute routine
Monday: post a Google Post. Wednesday: respond to any new reviews or questions. Friday: upload 1–2 new photos. That's it. Most businesses skip this and wonder why they're not ranking. The ones that do it consistently dominate the Map Pack in 6–12 months.
How fast you'll see results
A brand-new profile usually starts ranking in 4–8 weeks after verification. Existing profiles that get the full checklist treatment typically see Map Pack movement in 30–60 days. Competitive cities and industries take 3–6 months and require ongoing review-building.
